The recent blasts in two Delhi Cinema halls have, once again, refreshed the public memory of a bloodily movement in Punjab that rocked the entire nation during the '80s. Delhi Police is now probing the role of Ranjeet Singh Neeta, leader of a defunct group called Khalistan Zindabad Force. The movement for a free Khalistan may seem very weak today, but twenty years ago, Punjab was the stage for mass killing by militants.

By mid May 1984 the state was under the grip of terror for nearly three years. The terrorist movement seeking to carve an independent Punjab had acquired monstrous proportions. Terror attacks on politicians, law-enforcers, and the common man became almost an everyday affair.

Heading this bloody movement was Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a preacher turned separatist who ran the terrorist campaign allegedly from the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Till 1983 thousands of people were killed all over Punjab by armed brigades of young motorcycle-born terrorists who would suddenly come and with one burst of machine gun kill innocent people.

In 1982, Bhindrenwale was arrested but was released in two days. In later half of 1982 he moved to Golden temple complex and allegedly setup his headquarters in Guru Ram Das Sarai. In 1984 he moved to Akal Takht.
